Packaging is defined as “all products made of any materials of any nature to be used for the containment, protection, handling, delivery and preservation of goods from the producer to the user or consumer.” Packaging serve many purposes, including physical protection, barrier protection, information transmission, containment or agglomeration, marketing, convenience, and portion control. Packaging materials include (but not limited to) paper/fiberboard, plastic, glass, and metals.

Introduction to Packaging is a course designed to give packaging industry professionals a sound understanding of the science and applications of various packaging materials. The raw materials, manufacturing processes and conversion processes used for high volume packaging materials and components are studied. In addition, the course reviews fundamental concepts of materials science and then applies that to common packaging materials, such as plastics, metals, papers and composites.

Packaging Science Fundamentals is recognized as an approved packaging course by the BRCGS.
