The Water and Wastewater Treatment Certificate Program is designed to build competency in the design and management of modern drinking water and wastewater treatment plants. This program reviews the chemical, physical, and biological processes necessary for improving these water systems. In addition, the principles of coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, biological treatment, solids handling, disinfection, and advanced treatment processes are presented.
The Water and Wastewater Treatment Certificate Program can often be substituted for experience, allowing a worker to become licensed at a higher level more quickly. Completion will enhance an applicant’s competitiveness in the job market for such positions as.

Water & Wastewater Treatment: An Introduction
Water and Wastewater Treatment: An Introduction is a course that introduces the problem-solving concepts and tools commonly used in environmental engineering, present the fundamental operations and processes that are used in environmental engineering, with a focus on water and wastewater treatment processes, and instills knowledge essential for basic understanding of environmental systems. The topics covered include an introduction to environmental engineering and environmental systems, materials and energy balances, reactors, hydraulic characteristics, and flow regimes, water use trends and projections, water chemistry concepts, water constituents and quality standards, and a review of physical, chemical, and biological treatment options.
Water & Wastewater Treatment: Treatment Technologies
Wastewater Treatment Technologies is a course that reviews the various disinfectant technologies that are available for use, and are under development. We also review the various causes of biological growth including the microorganisms that contribute to equipment fouling and system factors that magnify growth. We provide a practical review of industrial biocides- oxidizing and non oxidizing agents, surface cleaning treatments, measurement, feeding, and system requirements, in addition to environmental and safety concerns, that are applicable to your system.
Hazardous Waste Treatment
This course focuses on traditional and innovative technologies, concepts, and principles applied to the management of hazardous waste and contaminated sites to protect human health and the environment. Topics include regulatory requirements; fate and transport of contaminants; physical, chemical, and biological treatment; land disposal restrictions; guidelines for design, construction, and closure of hazardous waste landfills; environmental monitoring systems; management of medical waste and treatment options; management of underground and aboveground storage tanks; toxicology and risk assessment; pollution prevention and waste minimization; hazardous waste generators and transporters; permitting and enforcement of hazardous waste facilities
After completion of the Water and Wastewater Treatment Certificate Program, students will be equipped with a basic understanding of the following:

- Water and wastewater treatment systems (purpose, operation, underlying mechanisms, and basic design)

No prior coursework or experience is required.
Students will be assigned 5 homework assignments, and 1 final exam.
