Instrumentation & Controls are commonly used as a primary technique for monitoring and controlling fluid temperature, pressure, level and flow in various systems and processes and find applications in nuclear, chemical, and mechanical systems. Technicians and engineers playing a role in the application, and selection of various instrumentation and control systems require a basic understanding of the application, operational characteristics, and components of various types of temperature, pressure, level, and flow control detection circuits. Process Instrumentation & Control is a course that provides an overview of these monitoring and controlling techniques.

After completing Process Instrumentation & Control, students will be equipped with a basic understanding of the following:

  • The basics of I&C including the different control functions, the types of control loops and continuous vs. discrete control
  • The identification and symbols used in I&C
  • The different types of field instrumentation, their principle of operation, the advantages and disadvantages and the application of the different types of sensors for flow, level, pressure and temperature measurements as well as for control valves
  • The requirements for control rooms and the design of control panels
  • The concepts and implementation of alarm and trip systems
  • The different types of computer-based control systems including PLCs and DCSs as well as review the basic requirements for good operator interface
  • The documentation required for I&C, for front-end engineering and for detail design
  • The requirements for a successful installation, instrument checkout and controller tuning
  • Project implementation and project management
  • Decision making tools; Auditing, Evaluation of Plant Needs, Justification and Control System Evaluation

This course is for those who want to learn about the I&C field in a condensed time frame and from a practical point of view and/or for those who simply want to communicate technically with I&C personnel. The course is designed to provide attendees with sufficient knowledge to move into the field of I&C. It is applicable to technical and supervisory personnel.

Students will be assigned 5 homework assignments, and 1 final exam.

Module 1 – Temperature Detectors

  • This module describes the construction, operation, and failure modes for various types of temperature detectors and indication circuits.

Module 2 – Pressure Detectors

  • This module describes the construction, operation, and failure modes for various types of pressure detectors and indication circuits.

Module 3 – Level Detectors

  • This module describes the construction, operation, and failure modes for various types of level detectors and indication circuits.

Module 4 – Flow Detectors

  • This module describes the construction, operation, and failure modes for various types of flow detectors and indication circuits.

Module 5 – Position Indicators

  • This module describes the construction, operation, and failure modes for various types of position indicators and control circuits.
