The Chemical Safety Course will cover: chemical hazards, safe handling, storage, hazard recognition and control, personal protective equipment, waste management, and emergency response. Fundamentals from this course can applied to chemical laboratories, manufacturing facilities, and other settings where chemicals are commonly used. References OSHA Standard 1910.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the fundamentals of chemicals and chemical hazards.
- Understand various chemical control mechanisms
- Understand chemical treatment and disposal options
- Understand the various chemical personal protective equipment (PPE) options
- Understand how to respond to chemical emergency situations
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Students will be assigned 5 homework assignments, and 1 final exam.

- Non-flammable solvents. (health hazard)
- Acids. Acids can be further divided into oxidizing acids, mineral acids, and organic acids. (Corrosive, reaction hazard, and health hazard.)
- Bases. Corrosive and health hazard. Reaction hazard with acids.
- Flammable liquids
- Process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals
- Dipping and coating operations
