Nanofabrication is the design and manufacture of devices with dimensions measured in nanometers (nanotechnology). Nanofabrication (nanomanufacturing) is of interest to computer engineers because it opens the door to super-high-density microprocessors and memory chips. It has been suggested that each data bit could be stored in a single atom. Carrying this further, a single atom might even be able to represent a byte or word of data. Nanofabrication has also caught the attention of the medical industry, the military, and the aerospace industry.

After completing Nanofabrication Techniques, students will be equipped with a basic understanding of the following:

  • Nanomachine fabrication techniques
  • Lithography
  • Thin film deposition
  • Dry etching
  • Polymer processing for medical
  • Self- assembly
  • Optical methods
  • Characterization techniques

This course is for those who want to understand how to fabricate nanomachines.

Students will be assigned 5 homework assignments, and 1 final exam.

  1. Optical lithography

  2. Electron beam lithography

  3. X-ray lithography and LIGA

  4. Nanoimprinting and Dip-pen lithography

  5. Thin film deposition

  6. Dry etching technologies

  7. Bulk and surface micromachining techniques for the fabrication of master molds

  8. Polymer processing for biomedical applications

  9. Scanning Probe Microscopy

  10. Near-field optical techniques for nanoscale fabrication and characterization

  11. Self-assembly and self-organization

  12. Integration of nanoscale biomedical devices and systems
