Horticulture is the science and art of producing, improving, marketing, and using fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants. It differs from botany and other plant sciences in that horticulture incorporates both science and aesthetics.

Certified Horticulturists are practicing horticulturists who are skilled and knowledgeable in all areas of horticulture.

After completing Horticulture Online Course & Certificate, students will be able to complete following:

  • Pass the American Society for Horticulture Science Certification Exam.
    This is necessary to obtain ASHS certification credential
  • Pass the Virginia Nursery & Landscape Association Certification Exam.
    This is necessary to become a Virginia Certified Horticulturist. VCH certification is recognized and accepted throughout the State of Virginia. You will be qualified to stamp and approve engineer, landscape architect, or design plans requiring plants. This is now a requirement by most Virginia City planning boards.

 

A basic understanding of plant life is recommended.

 

 Students will be assigned 5 homework assignments, and 1 final exam.

  2. Production of Fruits, Vegetables, Turf, and Ornamental Plants
  3. Shipping and Handling of Final Product
  4. Propagation
  5. Monitoring and Testing,
  6. Diagnosing and Managing Plant Problems
  7. Business Practices
